The Sport Of Curling

Curling is the greatest sport in the world today. Many people are not familiar with this wonderful sport. With origins in Scotland it has been played since the beginning of time. The sport is quite simple, it is played on an ice sheet with a team of four. One person throws a 42 pound rock down the ice sheet, and tries to get it as close to the center as possible to score points. The opposing team then tries to knock the other teams rocks away so they will have points. The other three team members are sweepers.. Their jobs are to change the direction or speed of the rock by sweeping the ice. To be a sweeper you must have exceptional athletic ability, and be in prime physical condition. Curling is much harder than it looks, it demands that you have the mind power to play chess along with the physical conditioning of a professional wrestler.

United States Olympic Curling

The United States Curling teams did fairly well in the 2002 winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The womens team led by skip, Keri Ericson, finished in fourth place. They had 6 wins in the tournament and lost a close one in the bronze medal game to an excellent team Canada. The mens team, team Summerville did not do quite as well as the women's, not making it to the medal round. but had a great performance in what was the greatest curling upset of all time. The Men's team beat a Canadian team favored to win the gold. The U.S. did much better in Curling this year than they have done in the past olympics. Both teams did exceptionally well and have the potential for greatness in the near future. The U.s.curling program will soon be a world power.

To the bottom right is a picture of two inner-city kids who want to curl but there is no where to do it. They play a version of the game called "Street Curling" This is a very sad sight and a sign that the government should build more ice sheets for kids like these who just want to curl.

Curling Profile
This month (April) curling.8m.net, gives Kari Ericson the honor of "curler of the month." Kari Ericson was the skip of this years U.S.A. curling team in the winter olympics. From Bimidji Minnesota, Kari is a life long curler. She is one of the greatest curlers of all time and will help to make curling the most popular sport in the world. Recently she appeared on the Winter Olympic version of the television game show, "The Weakest Link." She did very well answering the majority of her questions right. Sadly, she was voted off as the weakest link, by the all of the fruity male figure skaters. The other contestants clearly were no match for her knowledge.
